Leaving Disability at the Dockside

Our adventure began at Royal Quay Marina in North Shields, where we left the pontoon on a sunny morning, full of anticipation for the day ahead. Navigating through the lock, we entered the River Tyne, greeted by calm waters and clear skies. As we made our way out of the river and passed through the breakwaters, we turned south, setting our course for Whitby.

Meanwhile, our dedicated shore crew also departed North Shields, initially planning to head for Whitby. They remained flexible, unsure if we would spend the night there or continue to Scarborough. After navigating across the picturesque Yorkshire Moors, they rendezvoused at the Whitby Park and Ride, only to be informed that we had decided to push on to Scarborough.

The stunning scenery along the coastline was nothing short of spectacular. Every mile offered breathtaking views that only the Northeast coast can provide. Along the way, we encountered a vibrant array of birdlife. While we may not be ornithologists, we couldn’t help but appreciate the majestic beauty of these avian residents.

As we cruised towards Whitby, the sea swells gradually increased, adding a touch of excitement to our journey. Maintaining a good speed, we timed our arrival perfectly, entering the picturesque Whitby Harbour just in time for the 11:30 a.m. bridge swing.

The sight of the harbour was enchanting, and we were warmly welcomed by the team from Wetwheels Yorkshire, who were preparing for two upcoming experiences. They generously topped up our fuel tanks, ensuring we were ready for the next leg of our trip.

After meeting some of the inspiring participants from Wetwheels Yorkshire, we invited Dale, one of their long-term crew members, on board for a tour of our Wetwheels vessel. Sharing stories and experiences.

Departing Whitby alongside Wetwheels Yorkshire, we passed back through the bridge and out into the open sea. We stayed together for a few moments, capturing photographs and cherishing the camaraderie before bidding our farewells and turning south towards Scarborough.

As we progressed, the weather calmed, and the sea became more serene. Seizing the opportunity, we decided to try our hand at fishing, though luck wasn’t on our side this time. Despite no catches, the peaceful fishing interlude added a touch of relaxation to our day.

While we were making our way to Scarborough, our shore crew demonstrated their spontaneity. Realising it was a Sunday (because the days roll into each other!) and that shops would close early, they quickly secured a campsite that could accommodate three vehicles close to Scarborough. Elaine headed directly to the campsite with Chris, while Elspeth found a supermarket to buy provisions.

The road between Whitby and Scarborough provided its own entertainment, but everyone arrived at the campsite safely.

The boat arrived in Scarborough, skilfully navigating into a tight mooring. Our day concluded with preparations for the next significant leg of our journey to Lowestoft.

Reflecting on the day’s adventures, we felt a profound sense of gratitude for the beautiful weather, the stunning scenery, and the warm hospitality of the Wetwheels Yorkshire team.

This voyage was not just about reaching our destination but also about the incredible experiences and connections made along the way.
